Trumpet Mouthpiece

a Personal Choice
Trumpet MouthpieceChoosing a Trumpet Mouthpiece is probably one of the most complicated decisions trumpet players can make. Do I choose one with a bigger cup? Will I get a bigger sound? Will a shallow mouthpiece give me a better range or will it make my tone sound tinny?

The good news is that if you know what you want, then finding the right trumpet mouthpiece is as easy as pie. The trumpet mouthpieces listed at the very bottom of the page on eBay change as often as the weather, so be sure to check back often. This is the place to look for something used or rare that is not sold through retailers. Also, it may offer you the chance to find and bid on a mouthpiece that is too expensive for you from the brand-new resellers. If you want something new and more common your best place is to search for mouthpieces on Amazon. Above these eBay listings you will find some of the most popular trumpet mouthpieces at reasonable prices.

My Own Trumpet Mouthpiece

I am very old fashioned and am still playing on a Back-3C - that is on the rare occasions I still pick up the horn and play. The trumpet mouthpiece today has evolved into quite a business. Just about every great player seems to have his own line of horns and mouthpieces. Instructors become mentors of students and students become influenced on the many different types of rims, throats, necks and designs - all which supposedly are unique to the individual. I suppose its like going into one of those shoe shops where they have you walk on a special, digital treadmill while they assess the shape and direction of your feet and toes. The trumpet mouthpiece is not only unique to your lips but the shape of your mouth, teeth and embouchure. When you become really serious about the trumpet it certainly makes sense to research the various trumpet mouthpiece manufacturers. I don't know of many trumpet players who haven't switched mouthpieces at least a few times in their careers. It is good to have auction sites like these. To me, the Bach 3C is a safe bet. It is not too big, not too small and reasonably affordable. You can always start there as your playing and knowledge of your playing continue to evolve. Not everyone agrees on how the different characteristics of mouthpieces affect your sound, but below is a rough guide that should serve as a reasonable starting point

Mouthpiece Characteristics

Not everyone agrees on these characteristics, but these guidelines might help you find a place to start if you are shopping for a trumpet mouthpiece.

Cup

A deeper cup as its description would suggest should give you a bigger, 'deeper'  sound. Symphony players prefer deeper, cup-shaped mouthpieces. However, this may also require greater effort to play. Shallow, narrower mouthpieces require less effort to play. easier to produce tones from, and better for producing high notes. For a sweeter, mellower sound you might look for a cup that is v-shaped. Wider mouthpieces, overall, should give you a broader sound.

Throat or Backbore

Smaller throats require less error and thus less effort to play. The downside is smaller sound. For a bigger, freer sound, a large backbore will be worth the extra blowing-effort.

Rim

Rims can be highly personable, but in general a rounder rim is more comfortable and can offer better endurance. A thin or sharp rim can give you better control of attacks and articulation. Narrow rims can add to your control and flexibility. Wide rims feel more comfortable and can also provide better endurance.
